The Department of Public Welfare (DPW) has an ongoing need to hire qualified Pennsylvanians to provide service and leadership for its varied and diverse programs. There are two general types of jobs available with DPW: Civil Service and Non-Civil Service.
Each type of job involves a separate employment process, different from finding a job with most private companies and nonprofit organizations. Generally, if you are not already employed by the Department of Public Welfare (DPW) or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, you will have a greater chance of securing employment if you apply to the State Civil Service Commission or the Bureau of State Employment for future vacancies rather than attempting to apply directly to DPW for current advertised vacancies.
Job Opportunities
Civil Service
The State Civil Service Commission oversees Civil Service employment. The majority of the positions within DPW are covered by the Civil Service, which requires job candidates to participate in competitive examinations in order to qualify for employment. The DPW Recruitment Spotlight gives more information on Civil Service jobs with ongoing needs to fill.
Non-Civil Service
Non-Civil Service employment is managed by the Governor's Office of Administration, Bureau of State Employment. Job seekers looking for non-civil service jobs in Pennsylvania can apply online at www.employment.pa.gov.
Commonwealth Employees
Active state employees looking for other job opportunities with the Commonwealth can use JobNet to search for openings. Applicants may be asked to complete and provide a DPW Vacancy Bidding Form as well as other materials when applying.
