Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Participation Project Grantees
The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) has funded and collaborated with thirteen Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) to outreach to populations that tend not to access Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The CBO staff directly provides households with an understanding of their potential SNAP benefit eligibility. Households can then make an informed decision about whether they want to pursue a SNAP application.
The CBOs help households that want to apply by using the online Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Application for Social Services (COMPASS) to file an application. The CBO is able to follow the application’s progress and help the household through the application process. Through this effort, DPW has increased SNAP participation and provided program education to many more households than would have been possible without this collaboration.
