    Medication Administration Training Curriculum

OCYF Transitions to the DPW Medication Administration Train the Trainer Model

All providers licensed under the Chapter 3800 regulations were notified about the transition process from the Office of Children, Youth and Families (OCYF) Medication Administration Model to the Department of Public Welfare (DPW) Medication Administration Train the Trainer Course in a letter sent July 9, 2007. View this Letter (PDF download).

The effective replacement date of the new DPW model is June 30, 2009. As of June 30, 2009, the OCYF Medication Administration Model should no longer be utilized, as The DPW Medication Administration Training Model will be deemed the only Department approved curriculum for Chapter 3800-licensed providers. All facility staff who administer oral, topical and eye and ear drop prescription medications and epinephrine injections for insect bites, must be trained using the new DPW Medication Administration curriculum.

Registration for The DPW Medication Administration Train the Trainer Course was offered to Chapter 3800-licensed providers beginning in September 2007. Due to anticipated need for additional course offerings, the Department scheduled over 90 sessions for Fiscal Year 2007-2008. Registration for these course offerings has been low, therefore, courses with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled to avoid incurring additional costs. Many of the venues reserved for these sessions require cancellation four to eight weeks in advance of the event date so it is necessary to ensure sufficient registration counts well in advance of a course offering date. In the event of a course cancellation, existing registrants in each session will be re-scheduled into other sessions. Due to course offering cancellations caused by low registrant numbers, it is strongly advised that anyone interested in completed the train the trainer course during this fiscal year register as soon as possible.

Registration information is available in the Department of Public Welfare Medication Administration Train the Trainer Course brochure or by contacting ODP Consulting System at 1-800-438-1958. The brochure can be found at Train the Trainer Course as well as the Recertification Course Brochure.

As with the current OCYF model, the DPW Medication Administration Training Model does not include a diabetes education component for non-licensed staff who wish to administer insulin, according to Section 3800.188(b) of the Chapter 3800 regulations. Non-licensed staff persons who wish to administer insulin may consult with Diabetes Nurse Consultants at the Department of Health regarding availability of this specific type of training.
